You sent out resumes, completed applications, and waited to get responses. Now, that you finally got a response and interview review request, you are probably wondering how to prepare for an interview. Jobs Market has you covered with our latest blog where we discuss preparing for an interview. Below are our top four tips on getting ready for that important hiring step.

1. Do Your Research

It is important to be prepared for an interview. A key part of that is conducting research on the company you are interviewing with. Check out their website and social media. This will help you learn a little about who you might work for if you get the job. Additionally, it will help you prepare questions, see number 2, for the interview.

Here are some things to look for while researching a company:

  • What the company does
  • How long they’ve been in business
  • The company culture
Update your tech for a successful work from home experience

2. Prepare Answers for Questions They May Ask You

Whether you have been to hundreds of interviews, or this is your first, you know that you will be asked questions about yourself and employment history. It is crucial to be prepared for those questions.

There are many lists of questions an interviewer might ask. Here is a great list from Forbes of the top questions interviewers are asking currently and how to answer them. Read through some of those lists and determine what your response would be if someone asked you those questions.

While it might seem easier to just improvise, when you are in the moment nerves and memory tend to fail people so preparation helps avoid not knowing what to say.

3. Create a List of Questions to Ask the Interviewer

At some point during the interview, you can expect to hear, ‘Do you have any questions for me?’ Many people make the mistake of saying no to that question. Interviewers want to know you are engaged and listening! You should prepare a few questions in advance that you’d like to ask.

Below are some possible questions to ask to get your creative juices flowing.

  • What are you looking for in an employee?
  • What would you consider the best part about working at this company?
  • Are there opportunities for advancement in this position and at this company?

Another great way to get questions is actively listening during the interview and find something you need or want to know more about. That leads to the perfect content for a question to ask your interviewer.

4. Relax

If you have an in-person interview, always allow yourself an extra five minutes or so in travel time to your interview destination. This means you can use those few minutes for a mental recharge boost before going inside. If it is an online or phone interview, step away from the computer and/or phone for a few minutes before the interview starts.

Relaxation is key to calming nerves. Therefore, try a few of the below relaxation techniques before heading into your interview.

  • Take deep breaths
  • Visualize you ‘wowing’ the interviewer
  • Count to ten and then countdown from ten
  • Visualize a calming place – somewhere that makes you feel ‘zen’
  • Give yourself a quick pep talk

Now that you know some best ways for preparing for your interview, stop stressing, get out there, and win them over!
